Wag Your Words!
The Northern Virginia Dog Blog will host the Wag Your Words! Essay Contest this summer to promote responsible dog ownership! Animal shelters and charities will submit essays and compete through online voting for $5000 in grants to use toward veterinary care, spaying and neutering, dog food, and pet owner education.

"Responsible pet ownership is an important cause that benefits our pets and our waterways" said Laura Grape, representing the Northern Virginia Regional Commission. "We are excited to host a contest that will support local organizations and encourage people to keep dog waste out of area streams, all in a fun way.”
To compete, groups must "Wag Their Words" with a brief essay on the subject of “Responsible Dog Ownership” by midnight on July 15. The organizations will then compete to rally their supporters to vote for their favorite essays between July 18 and 29.
Northern Virginia dog charities may enter the contest. The sponsors define these organizations as those currently registered as a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organizations, which promote the welfare of dogs and, promote responsible pet ownership, especially the proper disposal of dog waste, and are based in and operate primarily within the city of Alexandria, Arlington County, the city of Fairfax, the city of Falls Church, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Stafford County, the town of Dumfries, the town of Herndon, the town of Leesburg, or the town of Vienna.
To enter the contest, go the contest application on the World Wide Web or on Facebook and follow directions to register and submit your essay. Any Virginia resident aged 18 or older may vote for the charity of their choice between June 27 and July 8, 2011.
